“We’ve all heard Silent Night – we sing it every Christmas.
For over 200 years now, our world has sung a lullaby about peace on earth, about the coming of our Savior. “Silent Night” was born in 1918 in a little Austrian village, a poem written by a pastor and a tune written by an organist. They taught it to their congregation at that year’s Christmas Eve service, and today it is sung in over 300 different languages around the world.
Something about this simple carol has continually captured us. What is it?
Perhaps it strikes a chord in our memories as a lullaby. We all grew up with lullabies. Perhaps it stuns us because our lives are so loud, so empty of peace and silence. Perhaps the simple nature of the song makes it easy to spread to others.
Maybe it is all of these things, and something more. Maybe it captures so clearly the incredible peace made available to all of us when God came down as a baby to be “with us,” to bring us back to Himself.
Tonight we explore that peace….”
